Conferences
Providing high quality regional professional development conferences
is a major CIStA objective.
The
CIStA Leadership Conference series is unique in that it brings together
school heads, senior administrators, and/or faculty with student leaders
(ages 14-19) in an environment that encourages a mix of experience,
perspectives, ideas, and dialogue. Schools that participate must
bring student participants as well as adult participants in approximately
equal numbers. From past
conferences, "the learning experience proves to be mutual, across
the generations."
CIStA
professional development conferences on other aspects of teaching and
learning offer faculty and administrators an opportunity to hear from
experts and network with educators in other schools.
Time for a Change: Youth
Leadership for a Sustainable Future
A conference for students, teachers, and
administrators
Presented by The Council of
International Schools of the Americas (CIStA)
and Lester B. Pearson United World
College
October 5th -8th, 2007
Pearson College Campus in Victoria, BC, Canada.
We've heard the news on climate change. We know we are the ones to make a difference. Now what?
The eighth annual CIStA Youth Leadership Conference will bring together students, teachers, and administrators to explore the theme of "Leading for a Sustainable Future". This experiential and interactive program will explore a spectrum of issues around environmental, social, cultural, and economic sustainability.
The program will be relevant and action-oriented, exploring both the theoretical and practical issues. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of sustainability issues and leave with concrete leadership skills.
In addition to workshop sessions we will be offering time for social gatherings, hiking, kayaking, or canoeing. Our campus also offers a chance to explore the spectacular west coast environment, adjoining both ancient forests and the Pacific Ocean.
Workshops include:
-
What is "sustainability" anyway?: broadening our definitions of what it means to us.
-
Thinking outside the (recycle) box: Integrating sustainable practices into daily life.
-
$ustainability: are a strong economy and sustainability mutually exclusive?
-
Global perspectives: how are the world’s most vulnerable people affected by issues of sustainability?
-
Good news for a change: Success stories from happy places.
-
The Youth Activist Toolkit: concrete actions youth can take today for a sustainable future.
-
Sustainable Schools: learn how students, teachers, administrators, and parents can work together
or a sustainable school.
Details:
Cost is $500-650 CAD per person (range of local accommodations available). Schools that participate must bring student participants as well as adult participants in approximately equal numbers
