What is CIStA?

CIStA, the Council of International Schools in the Americas, is a not-for-profit regional association open to Council of International Schools (CIS) members (in all categories) that are located in North, Central (including the Caribbean), and South America. 


Objectives

 CIStA shall have as its objectives:

  1. Advancement of internationalism through education by the distribution of services to its members including, but not necessarily limited to, the professional development of teachers and administrators in partnership with the students they serve;

  2. Promotion of intercultural understanding and international friendship through the activities of its members;

  3. Development of regular, on-going in-service opportunities for administrators, teachers and students within the region;

  4. Cooperation with other non-member organizations and individuals in the region pursuing the same objectives;

  5. Collaboration with CIS and other regional organizations, including the automatic right of access to services offered by CIS to include, but not limited to accreditation, recruitment, professional development and information technology services.

Membership Criteria

 CIStA shall have the following classes of membership:

  1. All CIS members, irrespective of their category of membership, that are located in North, Central (including the Caribbean) and South America, shall be members of CIStA. Any school or individual wishing to join CIStA must apply for membership in CIS. The membership fee for CIS membership shall include the membership fee for CIStA.

  2. CIStA shall have the following classes of membership:

  1. School Membership, open to all schools in the regions of the Americas and Caribbean that share the purposes of CIStA as described in (1) above, and those which may be called "international" in any of the following senses:

i. offering a curriculum in which the culture and educational
   system of two or more countries is represented; or

ii. offering a curriculum typical of one country, but located in
    another country and actively pursuing cultural exchange
    with its host country; or

iii. having a student body of diverse nationalities, educational
    aims and curricula offerings which promote and support
    the purposes of CIStA.

  1. Individual Membership, open to individuals interested in the aims and activities of CIStA and wishing to share in its services.

  2. Supporting Membership, open to publishers and manufacturers of educational materials and equipment, and organizations interested in supporting the aims of CIStA.

  3. Affiliate Membership, open to like-minded schools in the region that are not or do not wish to become members of CIS

  4. Honorary Membership, consisting of such persons as the Board of Directors may elect as a mark of esteem.

  5. Such other categories of membership as may be established by the Board of Directors of CIStA in conformity with these Bylaws.

  1. CIStA membership in all categories shall be approved by majority vote of the CIStA Board of Directors, in consultation with the CIS Board of Directors.
